Where to Find Black Friday Ads

black-fridayThis year, retailers are doing Black Friday on the day after Thanksgiving.  But they are also now doing it earlier than normal.

There has been almost histaria in the last few years as retailers have pitched their bargains earlier than ever.  With the advent of the internet, early leaks of these ads are more and more common.

But these early leaks have also given the Black Friday shopper an advantage over previous years.  Black Friday shopping can now be properly planned out by consumers.

Also, with the advent of "pre" Black Friday ads, retailers are driving their seasonal shopping sales earlier and earlier in the month of November.  Best Buy, Walmart, Sears and K-Mart are among those leading the way with the early super deals.

Here is small sample of the sites where you can get a preview of the deals stores are offering on Black Friday and before:

Thanksgiving Decorations and Resources

thanksgiving-2010Now that November is upon us, its a good time to look at some of places where can find information about Thanksgiving decorations.  The key is to finding free or affordable solutions.  Here are few of the resources we have found.

For cards and wallpaper themes go to BlueMountain.com.  The offer some decent fall and Thanksgiving themed wallpapers for your desktop – and you can also use these images to make crafts, cards and other decorations.

For more kid related themes, you can print some Thanksgiving coloring pages.  For this use ColoringPages.net or try your own Google search.  This is where I see that Disney's Family Fun site also has some interesting resources.

Tips for a Safe Halloween 2010

halloween-safetyWith only 2 days left until Halloween 2010 begins.  With everyone surely ready to get their costumes on, and play that spooky and scary Halloween songs and music, it's almost time to hit the streets to get some of that yummy candy.  Before you go, we have these important safety reminders form the U.S. CPSC:

Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Flame Resistant Costumes:

When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label "Flame Resistant." Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.

To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Costume Designs:

Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

• For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
• To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
• Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
• Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking.
• Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.
• Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.
• Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

Pedestrian Safety:

Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should walk, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street.

Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.

Choosing Safe Houses:

Children should go to homes only where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.

• Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult.
• People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps, and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited.

For more information on these Halloween safety tips, go to www.CPSC.gov or call the CPSC toll-free at (800) 638-2772.

Charlie Chaplin Cell Phone?

After working with a Charlie Chaplin movie clip for over a year to decipher it's contents, Filmmaker George Clarke thinks he may see something from the 1928 Charlie Chaplin "Circus" movie being held by extra that didn't exist back then…. A cell phone?

Clarke's explanation for the woman holding something to her ear and talking:

She’s a time traveller.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Revisited

edmund-fitzgeraldIt was more than a song by Gordon Lightfoot.  The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was the most famous shipping tragedy the Great Lakes have ever known.  Any current weather predictions are bringing that long ago memory back into focus.

A group of storms throughout the Midwest are threatening Chicago and Detroit with an attack that could be stronger than the gale that sunk the ill-fated boat in 1975.

Twenty-nine men died in the tragedy.

Joe Rasche said he and his family were searching for agate stones when he saw the ring near a fallen tree. Rasche said the ring was 100 feet from the water's edge, up a rocky slope and three feet into the trees.

"I went up over the bank to look at the blown over tree and there it was," he told the newspaper. "I bet it’s been laying there for 30 years at least."

Rasche offered the artifact to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Paradise, Mich.

"In honor of all the people who lost their lives, I think it belongs in the museum," he said.

For more than three decades, a service at the Mariner Church in Detroit honored the 29 men who went down. In 2006 the Canadian government declared the actual wreck, 500 feet down in Lake Superior, off limits to divers.

The first tell-all book from one of Woods’ many bedroom conquests, claims the “largely endowed” golfer liked three-way sex with women, fantasized about men and was stuck in a marriage to an uncaring gold digger.
