0% Balance Transfers Credit Card Offers Increase in October

0-balance-transfersA new monthly survey by SmartBalanceTransfers.com shows the number of 0% balance transfer credit card offers and the average length of 0% introductory rates offered by major U.S. credit card companies increased significantly in October. The average balance transfer fees fell slightly. The main reason behind the increase in 0% balance transfer lengths were changes in offers made from Citibank and Discover.

Are 0% credit cards a good idea for a consumer? It seems they would be, but there are things to consider before participating in one of these offers, according to experts. The potential service fees, which range between 3 to 5%, on these "deals" ensure that the credit card companies get their money. These offers typically have a short period of time to get the prefered rate.  Banks also have a good chance at getting the customer locked in at the high rate that begins if the full balance is not paid within the short 3 or 6 month period. Consumers need to ensure that they can pay off the balance during the 0% period. The “go-back to” rates on most offers are higher than the regular card rates.

Real Clear Politics 2010 Polls Shows Tighting Races

New polls released today by Real Clear Politics show tightening Senate and House races.  During this last week of campaigning, it's still difficult to determine the outcome of many of the races.  Tight races include Senate races in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado, California, Alaska, and Nevada, which features tea party favorite Sharon Angle against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Many house races are also now beginning to tighten, with many tea party backed candidates gaining momentum.  Experts say this is due to the so called enthusiasm gap between Democrat and Republican voters, with Independents now breaking towards the Republicans.

Black Friday 2010 Ads Earlier Than Usual

Black Friday 2010 doesn’t officially start until Mid-November, but U.S. retailers, including Sears, have already begun announcing upcoming weekend sales.

Traditionally, Black Friday is the start of the Christmas shopping season as a very large number of retailers offer big discounts on a variety of products. Retailers such as Best Buy, Macy’s, Toys “R” Us, Walmart, K-Mart and Target open very early at 5AM or even earlier. Upon opening, they offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to bring people to their stores.

Sears isn't actually calling it a "Black Friday" sale, but it is suggesting that it is a "Pre-Black Friday" sale. A variety of "Black Friday" type product deals will be available.

As an additional incentive, for every item you buy, they are promoting "double" Sears Xtra points. The Sears sale will begin on October 29th, and will end on October 30th.

Political Analyst Juan Williams fired from NPR

Political analyst Juan Williams has been fired from National Public Radio for the remarks he made regarding Muslims. Juan Williams made controversial comments about Muslims on the Bill O'Reilly Fox Show.

Williams is quoted as saying on the show "I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous",.

While referring to suspected Times Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, Juan Williams said, "He said the war with Muslims, America's war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don't think there's any way to get away from these facts."

Williams has not commented on his impending dismissal.

Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill Again?

The WSJ has reported that Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife, Virginia, earlier this month called Anita Hill, now a professor at Brandeis University, seeking an apology. During Justice Thomas’s confirmation hearings in 1991, Hill alleged that Thomas, as her boss, had sexually harassed her at the Education Department and later at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Thomas vehemently denied the allegations.

“I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get passed (sic) what happened so long ago,” Virginia Thomas said through a spokesman. Hill said she didn’t take Mrs. Thomas’s Oct. 9 voicemail as conciliatory.

“I certainly thought the call was inappropriate,” Hill said through a Brandeis spokesman. “I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony.”

“Good morning, Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas,” the message went. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. Okay have a good day.”
